Enter Gustobald Pitch, expert necromancer and self-styled wizard-detective. Shunned by the good wizards of the academy, he will need Isabel’s help if he is to uncover the plot, avenge the Archseer’s death, and remember exactly where he left his smoking pipe. when i started reading this, it felt like more of a comedic fantasy. the famous wizard gustobald pitch is described at first as a bumbling, absent-minded kind of character, misplacing items and having one-sided conversations with himself. but once the plot got going, things got more serious and the story developed into a pretty well-crafted murder mystery. the investigation has numerous twists and turns, but it never seems contrived or nonsensical, and the interactions between isabel and gustobald are both entertaining and realistic. gustobald is a wonderfully complex character, full of spite and bitterness, but incredibly sharp despite his comic mannerisms, and earnest and compassionate when he needs to be. the protagonist isabel is less interesting at first, but as the story progresses, she develops into a real character and not just a narrator.i'd give this five stars, but there are a few problems. isabel references her condition several times early in the book but doesn't explain it to the reader, creating a false kind of suspense, and when she does finally tell the truth to gustobald, it seems pointless to have kept it a secret for so long. it was a clumsy plot device and suspends isabel's character development until the reader finds out what her problem is. it was just clumsy and unnecessary. and most of the secondary characters in the book aren't written very well, they come across as little more than names. i think the book could have been greatly improved if more of the politics of the wizard academy had been explained early on, rather than explaining each element of the academy separately, whenever gustobald needed to interact with it. these might sound like minor complaints, but they bothered me enough that it hampered my enjoyment of the book.

Necrospect Chronicles of the WizardDetective Volume 1 JB Markes 9781544139029 Books Reviews
Murder and mayhem abound at a wizard academy when necromancer Gustobald Pitch comes to the school. The Archseer is murdered and Gustobald sets out to find the killer. He's a bumbling detective like Columbo, but also like the famed detective, he knows more about what's going on than he lets on. Assisted by apprentice Isabel Ives, he does what he has to to trap a murderer.
This was a well-thought-out and well-executed story. I read a lot, and this has to be one of my favorite stories of late. The fantasy world is vivid and the characters are alive (well, except for those who are dead). It was easy to get wrapped up in this story. I hated for it to end. I definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to solve a magical who-done-it.
I received a copy of this book through the Scout program.
Necrospect Chronicles of the Wizard-Detective by J.B. Markes is a fantasy mystery together. It was a scout book. The plot was good and the characters fairly well developed. There is some suspense, humor, and good interaction between the main characters. One appears to be a clueless detective. An enjoyable read overall.
I really enjoyed this book. I'm hoping it's the start of a series and not a single stand-alone book. At times it did feel like this could of been book 2 of a series because there isn't alot of detail of the characters just glimpses here and there of their backstory. This book was like a good cozy mystery with a magic setting. Taking place in an magical academy. The book was very well written and the story arc very captivating. The only reason for it showing 4 stars (technically i give it 4 1/2 ) not 5 is because of the lack of character development. It did not effect the flow of the book and it was still enjoyable I just really wish it felt like book 1 not book 2 if that makes sense.
I really liked this book. The characters were well developed and the story was really interesting. There were some times where the book felt like the middle book in a series because of complex backstories that only mentioned in passing. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would be interested in what happens next.
What an interesting story! I hope this is the start of a series of stories. I feel the main character's just starting to develop, even though she developed a lot in the course of this story.
The story is nicely women together and readers are taken on a journey of discovery when experiencing this story.
Highly recommended.
Though I was expecting imaginative Harry Dresden-style with bizzare/colorful characters, this was actually more Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett version). Gustobald was verySherlock with his anti-social crabby attitude and attention to detail while Isobel was definitely Watson in how the story is told from her perspective as a memoir in the future (which felt a bit jarring since she kept referring to things that hadn’t happened yet -mostly in how Gustobald has always been like this or done something that particular way) (she also felt like Watson in how she was always following around after Pitch, seeming out of her depth and having to do the menial dirty-work or be the personable warm questioner of the investigation because of Pitch being stand-offish, rude, and forbidding). However, the largest issue I had with this book was in fact Isobel herself. She’s an incredibly bland character with no personality. She just does things without any real emotion or has any past history. In fact, there was nothing really to make her female (other than a slight romance near the halfway mark). The story takes place exclusively on the school campus. The school was still very much like Hogwarts (but without whimsy). There was a potions department, and a divination department, and enchanting, etc, with heads of department just like the professors at Hogwarts, and the headmaster had been killed very reminiscent to Dumbledore getting killed. In all, it felt rather by the numbers, and rather dry and clinical as they went about their investigation, and antagonized the campus police. There was a further level of dryness as it also felt like a commentary on classes (which seems like it’s almost expected in anything set in the Victorians), with the magic users as being upper class, and the non-magical folk as being “commoners”.
